after the four day workers strike. kron 4's mike pelton joins us live now from hayward where he has all the details. good morning mike. >>mike: out here this morning they tell me it was just as bad as expected but they are thrilled that bart is back. >> i am happy it is back. the lot less stressful to. in >>pam: >> trains began rolling just after 3 yesterday afternoon as part and its two largest labor unions agreed to extend their existing contract by 30 days. this came as a request from state mediators. negotiations will continue, but set-asides that-the two sides remain far apart on these issues.

>> there could be another extension, the bart workers to go back on strike and we will just have to wait and see what happens. >> we don't want our writers stranded and we want a good contract. we are starting this last 30 day extension effort to hope that they will come to the table, fully prepared and fully engaged to work out this contract. >> reporter: the contract runs through august 4th. but it would be the earliest date they will get back to the bargaining table to set the exact schedule. now that the strike is over, there are now concerns over a possible backlash against bart employees.

this has prompted bart spokesperson jim allison to send out a strong message. >> we ask that our passengers treat employees with respect. we understand there was a lot of frustration and a lot of inconvenience but there'll be no tolerance for anyone who verbally or physically abused as anyone who works for bart. it is the same as always was and that safety of all our employees and our passengers is number one. we want to send a strong message that even if you are frustrated with the people who are there on the front lines, you need to treat them with respect and with the law. bart says it is prepared to keep it's employees safe. although the agency doesnt plan to be doing anything different when it to security. some bart employees say they feel safe. while others disagree. stay with kron 4 as we continue monitoring the

george zimmerman murder case has wrapped up its case - zimmerman's defense team is now asking for an aquittal for the volunteer neighborhood watchman. this comes after hearing the testimonies from two of the closest to the deceased 17- year-old trayvon martin. sara ganim reports. an emotional close to the week in the george zimmerman murder trial. trayvon martin's mother took the stand. listening to the audiotape of a 911 call the night her son died. in the background you could hear screams. yelling help. yes." then. a gunshot. >>"alright what is you. gunshot. there's gunshots. you just heard gunshots, yes" the shouting stops. >>"ma'm that screaming, or yelling, do you recognize that. yes. and who do you recognize that to be? trayvon benjamin martin." martin's brother also testified. he admitted he

as wildfires burned across the southwestern united states on friday, arizona senator john mccain discussed how across-the- board federal budget cuts, known as the sequester, will impact related agencies. >>"the forest serve the department of the interior are facing about 115 million dollars in wildlife suppression cuts - not just cuts to their budget - but a 115 million dollar cut in their wildlife suppression capabilities. and as senator flake just

mentioned, the forest service chief testified that agencies will hire 500 fewer firefighters this year and trucks will be reduced from 950 to 900." senator mccain spoke in prescott, arizona - near the site of the yarnell hill fire. 19 firefighters died fighting the fire. authorities say it may be at least another week before the fire is fully contained. vice president joe biden will attend a special memorial service honoring the 19 fallen firefighters next week. the firefighters were killed last sunday while battling the so-called yarnell hill fire. the men were members of the

prescott fire department's "hotshot" unit-- an elite squad that fights wildfires on the front line. their deaths marked the deadliest day for firefighters since 9-11. the f-b-i arrested a man it says tried to extort 250- thousand from paula deen. thomas pac-ulis of new york is accused of contacting the lawyer for the celebrity chef. authorities say he demanded cash in exchange for keeping quiet about what he called "true and damning" statements that deen made. paculis said the statements would bring financial ruin to deen if released. the federal charge was filed on june 24th, several days after deen released a video on youtube, apologizing for let's take a quick look outside this morning. let's check in with janu for >>janu:

reached a deal. the unions' current contract has been extended for 30 days. negotiations will continue during that time. trains will run until at least august 4th. if a new deal is not reached by august fourth, the bay area could be looking at another bart strike come august 5th. bart officials say they are happy service has resumed but there are still a lot of issues to work out with the unions. >> we are far apart to on our waste package. we are far apart on areas that are very important to us, safety, health and workers' compensation. those are are sticking point. bart management and the unions still have a lot of

a richmond couple is dead after illegal fireworks cause an explosion at their home. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc 7 news showing the aftermath. you can see the home on 21st street near roosevelt avenue in richmond. the fire started in a make- shift in-law's suite at the couple's home. they were found inside the garage which did not have smoke detectors. authorities found the couple's 26-year-old son on fire running through the yard. he is in critical condition this morning. firefighters have not estimated the cost of damage.

in east palo alto -- a road rage incident turns violent when a man is shot in the face. it happened just after midnight near the intersection of cooley and bell avenues. the victim's father says the shooter targeted his son when the young man tried to follow the suspect after a fender bender with another family member. >> i don't know why medina says his son is in stable condition but is in danger of losing an eye. the shooter remains at large. two volunteers from the american red cross in san jose will drive an emergency response vehicle to prescott, arizona today to help wildfire victims. this is video of the yarnell fire. they will leave the red cross's silicon valley chapter for arizona at two this afternoon. the aid vehicle can provide meals for up to 3-thousand people a day. the men plan to stay there for two to three weeks. they will join about 20 bay area red cross volunteers already serving in the prescott area. and a story you will only

the job market made strong improvements last month, beating analysts expectations. the labor department reports the economy added 195 -thousand new jobs in june. the national unemployment rate remains unchanged from may at 7- point-6-percent the federal government lost 5-thousand positions last month, continuing a trend that started in the wake of federal budget cuts and sequestor. those cuts eliminated 65- thousand government jobs in the past year.

the sectors with the biggest job gains last month were leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and retail. kids often say they want to be president when they grow up. but a new gallup survey shows parents don't want their kids in politics. the survey shows nearly two-thirds of americans do not want their children to pursue political careers. democrats and independents were slightly more likely than republicans to want their child to go into politics. and men were a little bit more likely than women to want their sons and daughters in politically- related careers. we'll be right back

the fire started in a make- shift in-law's suite at the couple's home. they were found inside the garage which did not have smoke detectors. authorities found the couple's 26-year-old son on fire running through the yard. he is in critical condition this morning. firefighters have not damage. in east palo alto -- a road rage incident turns violent when a man is shot in the face. it happened just after midnight near the intersection of cooley and bell avenues. the victim's father says the shooter targeted his son when the young man tried to follow the suspect after a fender bender with another family member. medina says his son is in stable condition but is in danger of losing an eye. the shooter remains at large.

as wildfires burned across the southwest friday, arizona senator john mccain discussed how across-the- board federal budget cuts, known as the sequester, will impact fire fighting agencies. "the forest service and the department of the interior are facing about 115 million dollars in wildlife suppression cuts - not just cuts to their budget - but a 115 million dollar cut in

whole foods market is issuing a cheese recall. crave brothers - les freres cheese - is being recalled after an outbreak of a bacterial infection was discovered. details on the recalled hot product are on your screen. officials say it sickened people in several states and killed at least one. the product sells under different names including les freres and crave brothers les freres. the bacteria found was listeria and it can lead to severe illness for women who are pregnant or people who have weakened immune systems. officials say one woman reportedly suffered a miscarriage due to the bacteria.
